CPR - Cardiopulmonary Resucitation for Unconscious Dogs and Cats, Part I
If not breathing:
Check for pulse in the upper part of the inside of the hind leg and feel chest wall behind left elbow for heart beat. Pull the tongue out and check mouth for any obstruction or vomit and remove.
Cats and small dogs:
a. Kneel facing pet.
b. Place hand under chest, the other palm over rib cage behind left elbow.
c. Compress chest about 1 inch and relax.
d. Repeat 10 times and then give one forced breath. Your mouth will cover their nose and mouth together.
e. Continue at this rate until you feel pulse or heartbeat or for 20 minutes.
Medium and Large Dogs:
a. Place pet on right side.
b. Kneel behind pet.
c. Compress chest behind dog's left elbow with one of your hands, one on top of the other.
d. Compress chest about 3 inches each time and relax.
e. Repeat 10 times and then give one forced breath.
f. Rest of procedure, same as for small dogs.
For medium and large dogs, hold the mouth closed and place your mouth over dog's nose. Blow into animal's nose and feel the chest expand one inch for small dogs and cats and 2 or 3 inches for medium and large dogs. If the animal is unable to continue breathing on his own, keep doing CPR until you can take him to a veterinary hospital.
